I think there is easier money in the design work, but having a 3d printer can really help show off your work. I wouldn't say that you'd have an easy time making money from 3D printing as in buying a printer and making money printing things yourself , but you can make money easily if you're good at 3D modeling.

Just make some good models that fill a niche and put them on Shapeways.
